work on removing the weeds on the West Terracing this month, which should make a huge difference in the weeks to come. We always knew the summer would be fighting a losing battle with the weeds and so will buckle down again this autumn to get the terracing cleared again and try to stay on top
Having started working on this idea in 2012, it is a real thrill to finally see our own version of Benny's life brought to the stage with this wonderful & talented ensemble cast and all of the hard work has paid off as we launched into our tour with the premiere in the beautiful Ayr Gaeity Theatre on Saturday. now quite obviously improving the old ground. We also worked hard on reducing and flattening out the running track and cleared around another 20 feet of it and brought it back down 2 inches to it's original level. The running track is again looking rough so decided to crack on with levelling and clearing it as well and recycling the top layer to again rebuild our planned 'Spion Kop' on the old stand-side as this will provide a firmer base on which to refashion a rudimentary Victorian terrace in the years to come.
But as you can see it's slow work but does massively improve the track surface and we aim to get most of the 400 yard track levelled and cleared by the end of this year which will make it far safer to run on once again. This is a track that the likes of Willie Maley and Harry McNeill raced on late in the 19th Century and deserves to be restored to a functioning surface again.
Delighted with how the old pitch wall has turned out following a three days of intensive scrubbing! And depending on the weather we will start repainting it in sections as we restore each small part of this East Terrace. We also began to replace the top surface of grass at this end of the ground which
was damaged previously but replaced with stone chip which has prevented the grass from regrowing. There is a broken drain underneath which has allowed the ground to flood at this East corner but the grass should now recover with our mix of turf over the top in all the 'bald' areas. So, almost a year into the restoration we are on track to make further repairs and improvements to the ground in 2019.Cathkin Park Limitedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18084831549536388745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8173581571837555106.post-76900667982801584532018-12-13T06:02:00.001-08:002018-12-13T06:02:13.858-08:00Restoration - Week 34So we are 34 weeks into our restoration work! Work commitments have slowed things down this month but delighted to get stuck back in to the East Terracing again. Cleared another 3 sections of tree roots, weeds & earth this week and back-filled 1/3 terrace step with red blaes. but we will wait until all the trees are bare before sweeping the terracing again. Winter is my favourite time of year to get this work done as the trees devoid of vegetation finally reveals the full atmospheric 'bowl' of the old stadium and shows us exactly what still remains underneath.
We have launched an ambitious plan to start raising funds to replace the missing concrete and eventually replace the old brick pavilion which once stood on the North trackside, with the announcement of our upcoming theatre show THE BENNY LYNCH STORY. We have been developing this idea for 7 years and delighted to have Davie Carswell come up with an excellent script. Benny fought 5 times at Cathkin and won every bout and this seems a fitting tribute to launch CPL as a Production Company.
The wonderful cast includes Stephen Purdon, Holly Jack & David Hayman and is directed by David Hayman Jr and the tour dates are above. We will be donating a percentage of the profits of this tour to the Benny Lynch Statue Fund and to the #Restore2ndHampden Fund. The show will run again in Glasgow in 2020, when hopefully Benny will have his statue up by then! We have gained nationwide press coverage this month for the show and huge thanks to Simon Houston and George Mair for covering the tour and getting the show out there. With the wet weather I have been able to dig deep and get entrenched large roots cut out and removed from this East section of the terracing.

The moss particularly has been thickest here and on these riser steps and again most of the concrete has long gone, so we are bucketing out the ash infill and scrubbing what stone remains. As you can see from these close-ups, the moss is like a green sticky wool and a bugger to remove properly.

But another ten hours graft this week made another wee dent in this section and every little bit done greatly improves the look of the terracing. Working with wire brushes as it is the only way to remove the moss almost strand by strand, but it is a laborious process.

However the stonework underneath is in great condition and scrubs up really well. Been sifting all of the spoil from here as well but still not unearthed anything of historical interest! Then we remove all of the ash, stone and mud from each terrace step before repacking the earth underneath and then

covering with buckets of red blaes from the track. This is, I hasten to add only a temporary solution and this will need to be back-filled with concrete in the next 12 months before we can truly sign off the work here. But it looks 100% better than it did in January when we began the restoration!!

We aim to have this section completed by the end of 2018, which would be 1/3 of this terrace restored and both riser stairwells. The side sections will be cleared and fixed up once the trees have shed their leaves and we can see the terracing a bit more clearly.

Then the plan is to move on to the last remaining untouched section still extant, on the SE corner, which has all but disappeared under the trees and waist-high weeds. And again due to the soft earth due to the heavy rain we managed to get working again on the running track this week, clearing another 12 x ? ft section. This was then packed hard and levelled out and is an improvement on the bumpy, unsafe surface it has been for as long as I have been involved here. It's another BIG job and will take at least a year to put right. But already I can envisage the thundering footsteps of players

Again it has been close work with wire brush and scraper, followed by repacking the earth below before resurfacing with red blaes and nice to see so much of the original stonework coming back to life under 50 years of growth and neglect.
But the photo above demonstrates just how much we still have to do to clear this terrace and how thick the trees and weeds have grown through this area over recent years. But the old ground is now enjoying it's 135th year of existence and we are only 10 full months into it's restoration and already the place feels very different.Cathkin Park Limitedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18084831549536388745noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8173581571837555106.post-35083595916180347712018-10-27T02:31:00.002-07:002018-10-27T02:31:43.073-07:00Restoration - Week 31Squeezed in another 10 hours of work this last two weeks due to work commitments and again attacked the EAST terracing once more! The weeds of course have grown back and the leaves now carpet the previously restored sections, but the ground looks suitable autumnal and we will start

clearing these up again next month. For now we are still concentrating on digging out the roots and undergrowth from the old Queens Park End and made progress this week. Cleared and levelled another 2 sections of the terrace and lined with red blaes.

However the original stonework underneath was deeply entrenched in moss and this took hours just to wire brush and clean off, but again am really happy with the final results. Although we are still
missing one long kerbstone here, this can be replaced once we buy the concrete and can begin to
refill the missing stepping. Most important for us is to realign the terrace steps that remain and remove the muck, ash and weeds permanently in order to prepare this section for the concrete. In the meantime however the red ash looks good and this area is now visibly improved from pitch level.
Really satisfied with our progress this year, despite the incremental nature of the work, but this is a 7 year project and we are still only beginning. This East Terrace has been a lot harder than anticipated due to the neglect and vandalism over the years but it is coming back to life and will be returned to full usage in the next year. old ground has provided the backdrop for dozens of television shows and news items over the decades, including Purple TV's excellent documentary on Third Lanark for BBC Alba in 2016. we shot our entry for the 2012 48 Hour Film Festival 'Cameron Stone' here, even interrupting the game at half-time to shoot scenes!
Perhaps the most famous role the ground has played has been as a filming location for Peter Mullan's NEDS, which had a memorable and hilarious gym class scene set in Cathkin Park. The old stadium in unique in look and atmosphere in Britain and this is just another aspect worth celebrating.
Inspired by it's Hollywood connections, we have also begun shooting documentary footage of our restoration work and charts our progress since January in cleaning up the remaining terracing and the whole ground in general.
So we hope other film companies will continue to use Cathkin in years to come and help continue to build an interest and promotion of the ground. As we have said, there is no place quite like it...
Another two sections of terracing cleaned and in-filled with red ash and another 20 buckets of spoil removed. Lots of branches and rubbish also cleared from this section this week and slowly this part of the ground is clearing and becoming more accessible.
Hopefully we will get this entire terracing completed by year end as it should become easier once the winter sets in and the trees are out of flowering. For now however we battle on through the undergrowth!
Also removed lots of the winter cut branches and added tonnes of earth to the dump site in the old car park, which we will re-use somewhere in the ground in the future as we are making this as 'green' a project as we possibly can and are recycling everything we find, even the WW2 spoil.
But as you can see from this week's photos, we are really transforming this part of Cathkin Park every single week and racked up hundreds of hours of graft in 2018. Noticed also that the 3rd LRV mural was in a bad state of neglect and started clearing this area too.
Repositioned another broken terrace step this week, scraped and cleaned and in-filled with red ash. Slow going again but very satisfied with the result, despite daily weeding needed! Lots more moss removed from the pitch wall too this week and another 5 feet of the original exposed.
10 hours graft put in this week and although there is much to do we are making progress as these photos show and will not be giving up any time soon! The ground has been left to rot over the years and is far too precious to be left in it's current state. Despite lots of noise from certain quarters, they have done nothing to save the crumbling terracing or the park in general.
We on the other hand, ARE doing ALL this work and will not accept others claiming otherwise. Cleared lots more terracing of growth and chopped out more large roots and re-aligned another kerbstone this week, still surprised by how much of this largely ignored terracing section is still in situ! Cleaned and polished another 1/3 terrace in this East End of the ground and again filled in
terracing and the running track alone. Not to be credited with this work has been galling to say the least, especially as yesterday was my 108th day this year grafting at the park! Instead our critic suggests that the Community Payback Team have done all the work! They have helped yes with basic scraping of 2 terraces and the tennis court area, but ALL of the work is ours. Thankfully we have
29 feet of the track is now cleared and levelled and another 12 feet of the pitch wall cleaned, brushed and prepared for repainting. So another tough week's work but pleased with the results. Thanks for all the support on Twitter folks. But back to clearing more of the running track this week, made easier by the moisture loosening up the impacted earth and again got lot's done this week, but heavy work as was mostly all digging and soil removal as we battled back along the overgrown terraces, removing some large and deep roots again, but cleared another large section.
The track has been useless for many years and it is heavy work levelling it out a couple of feet at a time but a large 20 x 10 foot section cleared this week and aiming to get the East track completed by the end of August 2018. Removing the tree stumps is proving difficult however!
But we are uncovering more of the pitch wall and cleaning that of moss as we go along in readiness for repainting white in coming weeks, but needing to repair the many breaks before we do so. We are doing this slowly and properly and despite accusations online elsewhere we ARE making progress!
This week some major weeding was carried out as well, returning this EAST TERRACE to it's former state and very pleased with the results of our labour these last few weeks. Over 100 days work now performed at Cathkin since mid-january and the ground is much improved.
Delighted this week to have finally dug out the enormous bushes that were growing wild in this section (above) and a HUGE tree root cut out and the terrace cleared of ash & rubbish & moss. We are inching along at present but have again cleaned and back-filled more steps with red blaes and
The East Terracing was a simple affair with wooden crush barriers erected on a grassed over shallow slope made of compacted earth. In 1946/47 the ground was closed for almost a season and a half as the rebuilding took place of all the terracing, including this very section as seen below as it was

However the weeds have grown back rapidly and we are fighting a losaing battle this summer to be honest as we are weeding by hand and having to go over old ground every week just to keep the terracing looking clean and clear of growth!

Roll on the Winter! But undaunted we cracked on with dozens of buckets of ash, moss and soil removed from the terracing this week as well as returning to level the unstable running track in this end of the ground. Cleared 12 feet x 10 feet so far and although unsightly, it does really even out
the surface for running on and although laborious, it needs done urgently.

As you can see however we have a long way to go before the whole 400 yard track is completed! But we have at least made a decent start of it and it will benefit all park users once completed as I see runners every day struggling with the lumps and bumps and it just is not operational at all in it's
